Network Marketing. When some hear these words in today’s marketing paradigm they think of hurt, failure, a dream crusher. But when I hear the words “Network Marketing, I think of hope, faith, and unlimited possibilities.
How can the same words demand such opposite reactions?
The answer is, personal experience. Everyone has their own perceptions due to their personal experiences in life. I have spoken with thousands of individuals over the years I have journeyed this path. I have had the privilege of listening to journeys of individuals across the globe.
When I first stepped into this world, we call network marketing, I was overwhelmed with excitement of the possibilities that stood in my path. I had the same untainted hope that we all have at the start of our journey. I was on cloud nine and in the honeymoon phase of my journey.
I remember getting on my first phone call. I was so excited to share this amazing opportunity with someone else, anyone else. Looking back now, I would compare my excitement as I did as a child on Christmas Eve. I just knew Santa was coming and I was so excited to wake up that next morning, bright and early, to run down those stairs and just look upon everything I would receive.
My first leads I received were COLD leads. When I say COLD, I mean COLD, like the Neverland’s COLD. I got on that phone and my fingers raced as fast as they could to get those numbers punched in. When I selected the talk button, my heart was racing with excitement. My first prospect I called answered the phone, this was the moment I will never forget! She answered, and my heart pounded with anticipation.
PROSPECT: “Hello.” she said in a low, monotone voice.
ME: “Hi! This is Lauren. How are you doing today?” I said excitedly!
PROSPECT: “Who is this?” she murmured in an annoyed tone.
ME: “My name is Lauren. You responded to an advertisement, stating that you are looking to earn some extra money from home. Is this a good time to give you a call back?” I said in a less enthusiastic voice.
PROSPECT: I don’t know who in the h*** you are or why in the h*** you are calling me. I HATE Network Marketing. Don’t f***** call me again.” she yelled.
That is when I heard the phone disconnect. As you can imagine, I was in shock! I remember hanging the phone up and just staring at my LONG list of leads I was still planning on calling. That day my eyes were opened to an entirely different perspective. That call was the first of hundreds of individuals that had been let down in this industry.
That moment impacted me. It felt the same as when I was told Santa was not real in second grade. I remember running home from Joy Bible Club as fast as I could. As soon as I made it to my house (only about a block away… But I did cut through 5 individuals yards.) I found my dad cleaning out the camper. I ran to him and tugged on his jeans in tears. I still remember him turning around to look in my eyes as I shared what I had been told. I thought I was disappointed then, but what came next impacted me more.
My dad spoke the words no kid wants to hear, the truth that mommy and daddy are Santa, and Santa is not real. I remember feeling like my insides were crushed and had been torn into a million little pieces. Why does this impact kids so strongly? Because they lose belief in something that seems so amazing.
When I hear stories of brokenness, of hurt, of lost hope in this industry and in individuals themselves, it truly breaks my heart. It brings me back to that conversation I had with my dad on a Wednesday afternoon. You may be one of those individuals that have worked in previous companies or with previous leaders and given it your all, only to never reach your full potential or you have and lost it.
